LITTLE ROCK — The man accused in the beating death of a television anchor told Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza today that he wants a new attorney.

Curtis Lavelle Vance, 28, said during a hearing in a crowded courtroom filled with many family and friends of the victim that prosecutors had evidence he had not seen and that his lawyers had not talked to him about.

“The prosecutors know more about the case than I do … you all got the world thinking I did this,” he said, adding,  “I need to see some results.”

He said he wasn’t aware about tests linking his hair to the murder scene until hearing about it in media reports.

“I ain’t seen nothing,” he said. “I don’t want (prosecutors) talking about my case.”

Vance’s public defender, Katherine Streett, asked that her client be given a mental evaluation. Vance’s next court hearing is scheduled for June 16.

When Piazza told Vance that he thought his public defense team was a “good group of lawyers,” Vance quickly disagreed, saying, “That’s your opinion.”

The judge later urged Vance to work with his attorneys.

“They can’t represent you unless you cooperate with them,” he said.

After the hearing, Vance’s mother, Jacqueline Vance Burnett of Little Rock, said she hopes her son works with the attorneys, but added that she thinks he should be appointed a new one by the judge.

“I am concerned,” she told a Stephens Media reporter. “They’re not telling me anything and I’m his mama. I have to look at the news and get my reports from the news.”

Vance was arrested in November and charged with killing Anne Pressley, an anchor for KATV in Little Rock.

Pressley, 26, was found beaten in her home on Oct. 20. She died five days later at a Little Rock hospital.

Vance, charged with capital murder, rape, burglary and theft, has pleaded not guilty.
