GPS getting to know me

I was headed back home after a lunch meeting. The drive back would take about an hour and a half. I needed to use the restroom, but the cafe had but one and it was locked for what seemed like an eternity. I did not want to wait around at the restaurant, so I paid my bill and headed out. The cafe was in the downtown area of a city where I’ve attended lots of meetings recently.  Downtown areas can be confusing, so I like fire up the GPS, hit “HOME” on my favorites list and let the GPS negotiate me through the city to the interstate. Normally, it takes me to the outer stretch of interstate around the city. But this time, it took me through the university area toward the inner stretch. The route was just as quick as any other route, but it took me right past a fast food restaurant conveniently located on the right side of the road. I was able to stop, use the restroom and grab some coffee before hopping on the interstate. By the time I made the pit stop, I was about to burst. It was as if my GPS knew I desperately needed to use the bathroom and could use some caffeine for the ride home. I guess I’ve interacted with my portable GPS enough for it to get to know me.  After today, I might just feel comfortable enough to start venting and gossiping to it while it spouts out directions, similar to the relationship between a client and a hair stylist. As a matter of fact, I just might compare the two relationship types – GPS-driver and client-hair stylist – in an upcoming column.
