State to get $16.7 million for transportation needs

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas will receive $16.7 million in federal stimulus money to meet various transportation needs across the state, members of Arkansas’ congressional delegation announced Friday.

The bulk of the money, $15.1 million, will go to the state Highway and Transportation Department to replace 126 vehicles for transit providers, including 65 lift busses that are smaller than 30 feet, eight intercity buses, two rubber-tired trolleys, 21 vans with lifts and 30 vans without lifts.

The Ozark Regional Transit will receive $1.5 million to purchase five replacements buses that are smaller than 30 feet, eight replacement vans, 12 bus stop passenger shelters and 1,764 for Ozark Regional Transit to purchase 5 replacement buses that are smaller than 30 feet, eight replacement vans, 12 bus stop passenger shelters and Automatic Data Processing hardware.

“These latest funds will provide our communities with much-needed resources to keep Arkansas safe,” U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., said in a release announcing the funding.

Overall, Arkansas is to receive $2.9 billion from the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act approved by Congress to stimulate the economic in a recession.

The state highway department is to receive more than $350 million in federal stimulus money. The department has already awarded 58 road and bridge projects with $104 million of the funds.
