It’s a day for health care reform commentary.
I’m in there with this column this morning saying Democrats shouldn’t be heartened or emboldened by favorable new polls because they’ve been here before — in 1993 — and, when it gets right down to it, you can’t ask people to reap no tangible benefit themselves in exchange [...]

RE: “As I point out this morning, seniors on Medicare are tepid to the whole thing because there’s nothing in it for them; or, worse, seniors will sustain cuts in Medicare benefits to help bring down these soaring CBO estimates of the cost.”
You didn’t read your papers over the weekend. The drug companies have agreed to pay for eliminating the donut hole or gaps in drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. That is a huge benefit for seniors.

Also, paying providers more appropriately can save Medicare money and not cut benefits for seniors.
While public opinion is very similar to what it was in 1993 and 1994, the policy being sold is different. Obama and Democrats can say that people who have coverage they like can keep it, only it will likely change to be more affordable. Clinton was going to throw everyone into something called managed competition if they liked it or not. Also, if the government does nothing — your coverage is likely to go away or become even more expensive. That seems believable after millions of Americans have lost their jobs and millions more have lost health care.
