so, Dr. Produced-by-Stephens-Media, it's the responsibility of the under-insured worker to understand and control a whole complex system just to get his kid's ear treated?

gosh, if only he could pitch in a few cents a year to pay a group of folks to learn all they can about health care and devise a system that does the best it can for everyone including his kid and that prevents the titans of industry from high-jacking the system and turning it into a private gold mine.

That'd be cool, right Stephens Heart Center?
Right, Stephen Spine Institute?
Right...?

I agree with the your take on consumer choice but we are placing a lot of discretion in the hands of people that may not feel informed or confident enough to make that decision. I'd like to lay more of the responsibility on the physician but they are under pressure for quick fixes as well so its difficult for me decry their actions too strongly. However, they get paid to offer their opinion and in this case the Doc should have just suggested the treatments without antibiotics. They get paid well to make these sort of judgment calls.
