Republican Griffin to run for Snyder’s seat

LITTLE ROCK — Republican Tim Griffin, a former interim U.S. attorney, said today he plans to challenge incumbent 2nd District Democrat Vic Snyder in next year’s election.

The 41-year-old Griffin replaced former federal prosecutor Bud Cummins, who later said he was forced out by the Bush administration in a controversial purging of Justice Department officials.

Earlier, Griffin had considered but decided against a challenge to Democratic U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln in 2010.

Snyder is seeking re-election to the Central Arkansas congressional seat he first won in 1996.

Republican David Meeks of Conway previously announce his candidacy for Snyder’s seat.

Griffin said today Snyder’s views are too liberal and do not represent the district.

“My driving force would be so the views and values of the folks in the 2nd Congressional District are represented in the votes,” he said. “I think there is a disconnect between the representation that the folks have been getting and the views of the … district.”

In particular, Griffin said he disagreed with Snyder’s support for the proposed Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to form a union, and for clean energy legislation containing a “cap-and-trade” provision to allow companies to buy and sell carbon emission credits.

The rising national debt also would be an issue in the campaign, he said.
“Our debt is the greatest challenge and the greatest threat to us and our country,” he said.

Snyder said he was looking forward to his re-election bid.

“I congratulate anyone willing to step forward and participate in our great American democracy,” he said. “I wish Mr. Griffin well.”

Griffin said he ruled out a run for the U.S. Senate against Lincoln because six Republicans already have announced plans to run for the GOP nomination.

“I think my views are well represented there,” he said.
