Morrilton mayor cited for drinking on highway

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — Morrilton Mayor Bobby Kirby has a December court date to answer to a citation for drinking on the highway and careless and prohibited driving.

Kirby declined to comment Tuesday about the citation he received Monday evening. State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said the 70-year-old mayor was cited after a traffic stop on U.S. 64 on the western edge of Morrilton.

A trooper stopped Kirby about 8 p.m. for driving left of center, Sadler said. A cup containing a mixed alcoholic drink was in the vehicle, he said.

Kirby was taken to the Morrilton Police Department for a breathalyzer test. Sadler said he did not know what level of alcohol the test detected, but it was too low to charge Kirby with driving while intoxicated.

A Morrilton police officer drove Kirby home, Sadler said. Kirby is scheduled to appear in Morrilton District Court on Dec. 21.
