FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas played without two of its top cornerbacks during the 63-27 win against Eastern Michigan last week. Both have a chance to return in time for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.
Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said Monday he’s hopeful cornerback Ramon Broadway will be back in practice this week after sitting out with a hamstring injury.
However, Petrino said Broadway must be healthy enough to practice if heplans on returning.
“He did go out and run (Sunday) with the trainers,” Petrino said. “One thing about playing cornerback is you have to practice to be able to play so we’ll see how the week goes. But I’m hoping he’ll be back.”
Petrino said starter Andru Stewart also has an opportunity to earn his way back on the field after being held out for academic reasons. “Andru Stewart will be evaluated daily with how he does on his academic responsibilities,” Petrino said. “I like the player. He’s done a nice job playing for us. He just has to take care of his responsibilities academically.”
The absences left the Razorbacks short-handed. Rudell Crim — who was slowed by a hip pointer early in the week — started alongside freshman David Gordon. The Razorbacks also leaned on freshman Darius Winston and Greg Gatson to provide depth in the win.
Petrino said Gordon played well in his first start.
“He’s real competitive,” Petrino said. “He did a nice job with his technique. Did a nice job tackling. He just has to continue to get better and he’s going to get a ton of reps. But he’s a good football player.”
Smith’s Status
Petrino also was uncertain of running back Michael Smith’s status for the Gamecocks. The senior missed the Eastern Michigan game because of a hamstring injury, which has slowed him the past few weeks.
Smith, who leads the team with 360 rushing yards, did make progress Sunday, according to Petrino. However, the Razorbacks want Smith on the field this week.
“He was good on Sunday,” Petrino said. “He’s going to have to get out and practice and practice full speed to be ready for the game.”
The Razorbacks had no trouble running the ball without Smith last week. Arkansas piled up a season-high 292 yards against Eastern Michigan, which was last in the nation in rushing defense.
Broderick Green (134 yards), Knile Davis (59 yards) and Ronnie Wingo (51 yards) split the carries.
“I’m confident in those guys,” Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett said.
Petrus Honored
Arkansas guard Mitch Petrus was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week on Monday.
The senior picked up the honor after helping Arkansas run for 292 yards against the Eagles. The Razorbacks also did not allow a sack in the easy win.
Petrus is the first Arkansas offensive linemen to be recognized with the league’s weekly award this season.
“He played probably as aggressive as you can,” Petrino said. “His effort was very, very good. He did a nice job run blocking and in his pass (protection). He’s done that all year. I’ve been impressed with his commitment and how focused he’s been throughout the entire year.”
Troy Schedule
The SEC set its kickoff times and television schedule for Nov. 14. Kickoff for the Arkansas-Troy game in Razorback Stadium has been set for 6:35 p.m., and will be broadcast on CSS and Cox Sports Television.
