One thing I used to do over at the Morning News was take one final look back at Saturday’s game on Monday morning. More specific, I would review the five keys to victory that would run in Saturday’s paper. I’m bringing it with me over here to the new Hog Blog.
So let’s get to it.
1. Stay Accurate: It’s safe to say Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett was on target against South Carolina. Mallett completed 23 of 27 passes — which set a school record for completion percentage with a minimum of 20 attempts. He didn’t throw an interception. He helped Arkansas convert 10 of 16 times on third down. So it’s pretty obvious …. KEY ACCOMPLISHED
2. Keep Track of Jeffery: The South Carolina receiver was a big threat to Arkansas. He proved it, too, catching 5 passes for 116 yards with a touchdown. His big play was the 80-yard touchdown catch to open the second half. But holding Jeffery to 4 catches for 36 yards outside of the big play was a good note for the Hogs. But in reality, he did break free for a big one so … KEY NOT ACCOMPLISHED
3. Make Special Plays: Special teams play was going to be critical against the Gamecocks. Arkansas handed South Carolina seven points when Bobby Petrino called for a fake punt and it didn’t work. But special teams was solid the rest of the way. Alex Tejada boomed kickoffs into the end zone. And Jerell Norton had a punt return. Seriously, a punt return of 38 yards … KEY ACCOMPLISHED
4. Get Smith Going: Arkansas RB Michael Smith was back in action, but never broke loose. He finished with 15 rushing yards and 15 receiving on 11 touches. Not exactly a big day. But the backfield (led by Broderick Green) played an important role in both phases of the offense. It just wasn’t Smith turning in the big plays … KEY NOT ACCOMPLISHED
5. Put Pressure on Garcia: Arkansas was having some trouble getting to Garcia in the first half and the score reflected it. But the pressure was turned up in the second half and the Razorbacks finished with 2 sacks. Garcia also spent some time on the run after the break and finished completing 20 of 34 passes for 327 yards. It wasn’t a dominant performance, but it was enough … KEY ACCOMPLISHED
