Blog: Mallett Named SEC Player of Week

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has been named SEC Offensive Player of the Week this morning.

Mallett was recognized by the league after leading Arkansas to a 33-16 win against South Carolina on Saturday. The sophomore completed 23 of 27 passes for 329 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He did have a one-yard rushing touchdown.

It was the second straight week Mallett has been deadly accurate. His completion percentage (85.1) set the school’s single-game mark for players who have attempted at least 20 passes in a game. It broke Ronny South’s record of 81.8 percent set in 1967.

It came one week after Mallett broke the single-game completion percentage mark by going 14-for-16 against Eastern Michigan (87.5 percent). That record had previously been held by Billy Moore (12-for-14 – 85.7 percent) since 1962.

This has been a record-setting season for Mallett. He owns a bunch of Arkansas passing marks in his first year as its starting quarterback. He’ll have a chance for two more this Saturday. Mallett has thrown 123 consecutive passes without an interception and is 11 shy of tying Clint Stoerner’s mark of 134. Mallett also has 2,477 passing yards and is 152 short of tying Stoerner’s record of 2,629 in a season.
