Arkansas coach John Pelphrey has announced suspensions for the start of the season.
The most shocking news of the announcement? Point guard Courtney Fortson is out indefinitely.
Pelphrey said Arkansas will be without its returning starting point guard for an undetermined amount of time. It’s one part suspension, one part personal issues. Pelphrey would not delve into specifics, but we knew Fortson was going to be suspended for his insensitive message on Twitter. We don’t know the reasons – yet – why he has been suspended indefinitely.
“One thing I would say is with regards to Courtney, his is a little bit different,” Pelphrey said. “He has come to me. He has a couple of personal issues he wants to try to handle and we’re going to try to do that with him. And we’re going to support him and try to get him better. His says indefinite suspension, this is not something we’re going to resolve over a weekend or whatever.”
Here are the rest of the suspensions for Arkansas players:
• Marcus Britt — 6 games (For his role in the fraternity house incident and his offseason driving under the influence arrest)
• Glenn Bryant — 2 games (For his role in the fraternity house incident)
• Nick Mason — Not permitted to dress out for games during fall semester
• Stefan Welsh — Indefinite suspension
The Razorbacks also will be without forward Michael Sanchez, who has been sidelined by plantar fasciitis, for some time.
What does it mean? The Razorbacks will open the season against Alcorn State with 8 players. That includes 6 scholarship guys, quarterback Brandon Mitchell and walk-on Stephen Cox.
I’ve got to run over to the start of football practice, but I’ll more on this later.
(UPDATE)
