Former Newton County sheriff sentenced to prison

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — A former Newton County sheriff who pleaded guilty earlier this year to Social Security disability fraud, was sentenced in federal court today to eight months in prison and ordered to pay nearly $109,000 in restitution.

Jerry Lynn Jones, 60, of Marble Falls, appeared for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Jimm Hendren in Harrison.

Along with the federal prison sentence and restitution, Jones also was fined $3,000.

Jones was arrested after it was revealed he concealed his self-employment and earnings from the Social Security Administration while receiving disability benefits.

He failed to report self-employment income between April 1997 and January 2007, according to a news release.
