What can be said about Ryan Mallett’s performance on Saturday night?
The sophomore just polished off one of the most impressive passing performances in school history. It wasn’t the fact that he completed 23 of 30 passes for 405 yards with 5 touchdowns and an interception. It was the fact he also set or tied four school records in the process.
If you remember, I wrote a story about Mallett’s record-breaking ways earlier this week. You can see it by clicking this link.
Here are the marks he set or tied tonight:
• Consecutive passes without an interception (141). It broke Clint Stoerner’s mark of 134.
• Passing yards in a season (2,882). It broke Stoerner’s mark of 2,629.
• Passing touchdowns in a game (5). That tied the mark Mallett set against Georgia in September.
• 300-yard passing games in a season and career (4). Mallett ties a mark also held by Stoerner.
I wasn’t able to go downstairs to get quotes tonight because of tight deadlines, but did gather a few over the speaker system and with the help of some other writers in the press box. Here is some reaction to Mallett’s night from a few sources.
“Ryan looked at the defense and distributed the ball to our playmakers,” Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said. “It’s nice when you have enough playmakers to do that. You don’t have to force it at all.”
Also from Petrino: “Ryan showed a lot of toughness. They hit him a few times. They stepped on his hand one time. He can really stand in there and throw. He probably had his bet game as far as operating the offense under center. They blitzed a lot more than they’ve shown and Ryan did a good job of getting us out of bad plays and into good plays. He was effective with that.”
And here is a great one from Troy coach Larry Blakeney: “He has a big arm and he’s proud of it. He was throwing the ball for 60 yards, 10-15 times before the game. He’s a great and passionate player. He’s very astute in what they do.”
That’s about all I have time for tonight. I’ll check back in tomorrow with more from tonight’s game.
