It what should have come as no surprise, Arkansas guard Rotnei Clarke has been named the SEC’s Player of the Week.
Clarke was honored by the league after setting the school record in scoring with 51 points in Arkansas’ win against Alcorn State on Friday night. He also set SEC and school records for 3-pointers made with 13. The previous record had been held by former Hog Al Dillard (12).
Clarke will try to continue his strong start to the season when the Razorbacks play Louisville in St. Louis on Tuesday night. He’s expecting a much tougher challenge against the Cardinals and coach Rick Pitino, though. In fact, Arkansas coach John Pelphrey has joked that Pitino will have a couple of players looking to guard Clarke as soon as he steps off the airplane in St. Louis.
He was kidding. We think.
In football news, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett wasn’t as fortunate with the league office even though he put up big numbers Saturday.
The reigning SEC Player of the Week couldn’t pick up his second straight prize despite setting of tying for school records in the 56-20 win against Troy. You can’t really blame the SEC, though. Ole Miss running back Dexter McCluster was a good choice after ripping through Tennessee’s defense for 282 yards and 4 touchdowns. Mallett’s night was impressive, but McCluster’s was pretty remarkable.
