Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett’s performance the second half of the season has raised an interesting question.
Is there a chance the redshirt sophomore will leave the Razorbacks for the NFL after the year?
Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino doesn’t think so.
“He needs to be here another year for sure to make sure he continues to grow and improve,” Petrino said when asked about Mallett’s draft potential. “He’s seen so much improvement here lately he wants to make sure he keeps growing and improving.”
Mallett would be eligible to leave Arkansas and enter the 2010 NFL Draft because he is three years removed from high school. He struggled at times earlier this season, but has been nearly flawless running Arkansas’ offense the past three weeks.
Mallett completed 82.2 percent of his passes during the stretch for 982 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception. He also has set or tied six school records during the stretch, including Arkansas’ single-season passing mark.
But Petrino doesn’t believe the time is right for Mallett to leave and said Arkansas hasn’t talked about the possibilities with the quarterback.
“That will be something we can talk about at this time next year,” Petrino said.
Robinson Back
Arkansas defensive coordinator Willy Robinson was back on the field Tuesday, continuing to recover from an infection that hospitalized him last week.
Robinson resumed his work with the defense during the portion of practice open to the media. Paul Petrino said it was good to see Robinson, who was presented with a surprise before the workout.
“They gave him the game ball (Tuesday),” Petrino said. “It put a big smile on his face. He’s just happy to be back in the office and it’s great to have him back.”
