Beebe names special justice to coal plant case

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — Gov. Mike Beebe today named Danyelle Walker of Little Rock as a special justice of the state Supreme Court to hear a case involving construction of a controversial coal-fired power plant in Southwest Arkansas.

Walker replaces Justice Jim Gunter, who disqualified himself from the case in which Southwestern Electric Power Co. has asked the state’s highest court to review a state Court of Appeals decision to deny a permit for SWEPCO’s proposed $1.6 billion power plant in Hempstead County.

Gunter, a longtime lawyer and judge in Hempstead County before his election to the high court in 2004, did not participate in the Supreme Court’s decision to review the case.
