Sponsors sought for Civil War historical markers

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is inviting groups and organizations around the state to sponsor historical markers telling how the Civil War affected their area.

Chairman Tom Dupree said today the commission will contribute up to $1,000 toward the creation of the markers through the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker Program, which received initial funding from the federal Preserve America program.

Commission historians will work with the local sponsors to ensure that the information on the markers is accurate. The commission hopes to see at least one marker in each of Arkansas’ 75 counties.

Application forms are available on the commission’s Web site.
