The upcoming census appears to have been the impetus for annexation at that time. Articles and editorials in the Times and the Southwest American newspaper repeatedly noted the city’s “disappointing” 1900 census — which counted 11,000 as the population — and estimated that, with the annexed property, the city population would top 35,000.
