It’s pretty late here in Mississippi. But before I close the laptop for the night and grab a few hours of sleep, I wanted to dig a little deeper into Arkansas’ 80-73 win at 18th-ranked Ole Miss.
The Razorbacks got the kind of win that no one really expected. Not only was it on the road, where the Hogs had lost 15 straight Southeastern Conference games, it came in a building that Arkansas had traditionally struggled. The Razorbacks had won only one time in its previous 13 trips (dating back to 1996-97) to Tad Smith Coliseum before Sunday night’s victory. I can go back even further: The Hogs were 4-14 here since joining the SEC in 1991-92.
That’s not it. Here’s a long list of things accomplished Sunday:
* First road win since … South Alabama, Nov. 26, 2008 (Hogs had lost 11 straight)
* First SEC road win since … LSU, Jan. 26, 2008 (Hogs had lost 15 straight)
* First win vs. ranked team since … Texas, Jan. 6, 2009 (Had lost five straight)
* First road win vs. ranked team since … Vanderbilt, March 3, 2007 (Had lost previous two)
* First win in Oxford since … a 66-65 win on Feb. 5, 2005 (Breaks four game losing streak)
* First back-to-back SEC wins since … Beating Florida and Ole Miss in Feb. 2008
That’s a pretty good night. But Arkansas coach John Pelphrey spent a good deal of his postgame press conference trying to downplay the victory. He was happy to see his team get it, but doesn’t want Arkansas to get ahead of itself after experiencing some success in SEC play.
There’s no denying the opportunity Arkansas — which has struggled plenty this season — now believes it has in front of itself now at 3-3 in SEC play, though.
The Razorbacks play at Georgia (1-5 in SEC play) on Wednesday night, then come home for games against Auburn (2-5) and LSU (0-7).
