Blog: Contracts Are Up. Will Arkansas Assistants Return?

The three-year contracts for Arkansas’ assistant basketball coaches are set to expire at the end of the fiscal year.

Need proof? Here is the response I received this week to a Freedom of Information request:

Individual, University Salary, Appointment Date

Isaac Brown, $132,500, 6/30/2010

Rob Evans, $212,000, 6/30/2010

Tom Ostrom, $212,000, 6/30/2010

So after a season in which the Razorbacks finished below .500, an obvious question is raised?

Will there be a coaching staff shake-up?

We know Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long continues to publicly support head coach John Pelphrey, something I wrote about a few minutes ago after speaking with Long after tonight’s game. So assuming Pelphrey is not going anywhere, what does he think about his staff? Will they all be back next year?

Here is what Pelphrey said about his coaching staff tonight:

“I feel very comfortable with the guys we’ve got,” Pelphrey said. “I think continuity helps you continue to grow and get better. I think we have that with our staff. Those guys obviously work very hard. We’ve had some players achieve some awards since they’ve been here. Guys that we’ve brought. We aspire to get more of those.

“As a coaching staff, I think we put ourselves in a situation to compete for a championship this year. Obviously, our first year we didn’t have a whole lot to do with putting that team together but sometimes that’s the hardest thing to do is coach a team and be able to get them together and play well. Yeah, I feel very comfortable with those guys.”

So what did we learn: Does Pelphrey like the coaches he has on staff? Yes.

Does it mean they’ll all be back next year? We’ll have to wait and see.
