How well Tyler Wilson runs Arkansas’ offense in Ryan Mallett’s absence is the biggest storyline for the Razorbacks this spring. But here’s a look at five other questions facing the Hogs as they hold the first of 15 spring practices this afternoon:
1. Will the Defense Stand Strong? — Big plays were a big problem for Arkansas’ defense in 2009 and it’s an area the Hogs vow to change this spring. The good news is that the Hogs return most of their personnel in the secondary. But the group must show growth by cutting back on missed assignments and blown coverages.
2. How Will Carries Be Divided? — Arkansas has a big battle at running back on its hands. Four players will fight for carries and the competition should be intriguing. Ronnie Wingo Jr. and Knile Davis are the first two listed on the depth chart. But Broderick Green and Dennis Johnson have the most experience.
3. Who Will Stand Strong Up Front? — Arkansas knew who it could count on along its defensive front last season. But DT Malcolm Sheppard and DE Adrian Davis are gone, leaving big holes. DE Jake Bequette should step into a leadership role. Who else can be counted on? One candidate, DE Tenarius Wright, is out (foot).
4. How Will Coaches Mesh With Players? — Staff changes mean three new coaches are working with the Hogs this spring. How well will Steve Caldwell (defensive ends), Chris Klenakis (offensive line) and Kris Cinkovich (receivers) fit in? What changes will they bring? And how will it help the Razorbacks?
5. Is There Depth at Linebacker? — Arkansas is most vulnerable at linebacker this spring. Jerry Franklin, Freddy Burton and Jerico Nelson are back, but who else can help a team that needs sure-handed tacklers and aggressive hitters? Jermaine Love? Terrell Williams? Bret Harris? Arkansas must develop depth this spring.
