We woke up this morning to an interesting story from our friends over in Oklahoma.

One that has ties to the Arkansas basketball program before John Pelphrey’s arrival.

Oronde Taliaferro, a former Arkansas assistant from 2003-07 under former coach Stan Heath, is at the center of an NCAA investigation regarding some of his recruiting practices while working as an assistant coach at Oklahoma last year.

A joint report by both The Daily Oklahoman and the Tulsa World — again, click here — reveals that Taliaferro exchanged at least 41 phone calls and 25 text messages over a 10-month period with a Tampa financial adviser who reportedly wired $3,000 into the bank account of former Sooners forward Tiny Gallon. The report says the exchanges, who were with financial advisor Jeffrey Hausinger, took place between May 2009 and March 2010.

It’s important to note that making phone calls to a financial advisor doesn’t constitue an NCAA violation.

What they were talking about? What did it lead to? Did money exchange hands?

That is going to determine how much trouble Oklahoma’s hoops program could be in.

TMZ.com broke the story last year indicating that Hausinger, who worked for Merrill Lynch, wired the money into a bank account shared by Gallon and his mother, Sylvia Wright. Hausinger, who resigned from his job on March 26 and began working at Raymond James Financial Services on March 29, has denied giving money to Gallon. Taliaferro, who resigned at Oklahoma in early April, declined comment to the newspapers the day he resigned.

This is certainly going to be an issue worth watching as the school and NCAA investigates.

One that could have serious, serious consequences to the Oklahoma basketball program.
