It should come as no surprise, but Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett said he has filed paperwork for an insurance policy protecting him against injuries this season.
Mallett revealed the news during SEC Media Days after being asked about it in the print media room. He didn’t provide any details about the policy, but said it didn’t have any affect on his decision about returning to Arkansas or going into the NFL Draft.
“Really the whole process was going to talk to compliance at the university and just filled out some paperwork and sent it to the NCAA and really just went from there,” Mallett said. “I really didn’t have a lot to do with it except signing my name and filling out a bunch of forms.”
It’s not uncommon for college football players to take out insurance policies in case of injuries. It’s a smart move, frankly. We all saw what can happen to quarterbacks last season when Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury (twice). Bradford is all right, of course, being drafted with the top pick in the draft. But the policies are designed to help players with big-money potential who suffer career-ending injuries.
I asked Arkansas tight end D.J. Williams a little later about his own status. Williams said he hadn’t really done his homework and has not taken out a policy, yet.
