Blog: Notes From Friday’s Practice

The “newcomers” group just wrapped up their second workout of the preseason a few minutes ago.

A couple of tidbits to report:

• OT Anthony Oden was back on the field and completed the workout after leaving practice early on Thursday. Oden is one of a handful of returning scholarship players practicing with the “newcomers” group. So is FB Van Stumon. Both players, who were arrested for alcohol-related offenses in the offseason, stayed after the practice to do some extra conditioning work. I’m guessing it is part of their punishment.

• FB Jatashun Beachum, who is known as “Big Tex” also stayed after the workout to do extra conditioning work. His isn’t exactly a punishment, though. It’s clear the Razorbacks want the freshman – who is listed at a svelte 6-1, 270 — to trim some weight this preseason. I have a feeling the Dallas native could become a fan favorite in time because he has shown plenty of physical gifts in his first two days of practice.

• It appears Arkansas may have made at least one slight change in coaching responsibilities on special teams. Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee was working with Arkansas’ new punt returners during afternoon practice. Was told he did it yesterday, too. Last season, running backs coach Tim Horton worked with the punt returns.

• LB Terrell Williams was missing for most of the workout. I figured he had been “promoted” to the veterans practice later tonight. But Williams did appear on the field for the last portion of practice and worked with the defense during 11-on-11 drills.

• Counted 45 players on the field, 44 practicing, during the afternoon workout. That’s one short of Thursday’s practice. The only “newcomer” I didn’t see was punter Zach Hocker. My guess is that the Razorbacks are planning some punting work tonight and Hocker will compete with sophomore Dylan Breeding.

That’s all for now. I’ll check back in later tonight when the veterans practice ends.

    Robbie,

Do yourself and fans of Arkansas football a favor and research Joe Dugan. On the cover of the 1950 Media Guide, and while not a big guy, was a real BEAST. We graduated from the same high school, 22 years apart but his legacy was still there. As a player and graduate of The University of Houston, I always hated UofA but also loved it because of Joe. I’m currently coaching American football in Germany. http://www.ravensburgrazorbacks.de
