Blog: Notes From Wednesday Morning Practice

Arkansas wrapped up its morning practice a little while ago. Here are some observations

• First, we’ve been told there is a change to the afternoon schedule. The newcomers will be on the field from 4 p.m. to 6, but the veterans are not practicing. They’ve been given the afternoon off on what is the final day of two-a-day practices. We’re closing in on the final open workout of the preseason, too. After today, the only practices open to the media and public will be on Saturday morning.

• The highlight of the morning practice came at the very end when Arkansas place kickers were placed under the spotlight. Eddie Camara went 4-for-4 with a long of 43 yards, while Alex Tejada was 4-for-5 with a long of 34 and a bad miss from 26. The highlight might’ve come at the end, though, when Zach Hocker got another opportunity with the second-team kicking unit and went 7-for-12. He went 2-for-6 from 49 yards or longer, getting four chances at the very end to make a 51-yarder. On the last attempt, with the entire team huddled around him, Hocker drilled the 51-yarder to end the day.

• Arkansas is getting Anthony Leon plenty of work at linebacker. He was working with the first-team unit today alongside Jermaine Love (who was back from an injury) and Jerico Nelson. Rudell Crim also was back with the first-team unit after working with the two’s on Tuesday. Crim missed Monday’s practice with an injury.

• The only player I did not see during the morning workout was defensive tackle Patrick Jones. No word on his whereabouts.

• Remember how Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee was critical of the first-team offense for fumbling the ball on a quarterback-center exchange inside the five-yard line last week? Well, it happened again at the end of a two-minute drill today. Ryan Mallett and Travis Swanson had a problem around the goal line once again today. The play ended the first-team offense’s two-minute drill drive.

• More special teams notes: The punt returners – Marquel Wade, Joe Adams Jarius Wright and Eric Bennett — had a pretty good morning. And I say that because there weren’t any botched punts, fumbles or notable mistakes. Also, Dylan Breeding continues to look like he is ahead of Hocker in the running for the punting job.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back later with a practice report later this evening.
