Arkansas has released its depth chart for the season opener against Tennessee Tech.
If you want to view the entire depth chart click this link. It’s in a previous post on the website.
Let’s run through some things that stood out:
• Clearly, this is a depth chart that isn’t complete. Arkansas still has position battles ongoing at various spots and more of it may be determined after the team holds its mock game tonight (which is closed to the public and the media). Many, many, many OR’s on the depth chart. Some of the key battles ongoing are at center, left guard, running back, nose guard, cornerback, kicker, punter and at linebacker spot. OR everywhere.
• One of the milder surprises — We all thought junior Isaac Madison was a lock for a starting job, but the depth chart shows he is being pushed by sophomore Darius Winston for the starting spot. No starter has been named at the position, although Madison has lined up with the first team all preseason. And Winston has been limited in practice the last couple of days because of an injury to his middle finger.
• Anthony Leon moved to linebacker last week. And now, he’s locked in a battle for the starting job with … Jerry Franklin? Leon has been getting reps with the first-team group since his move and the Razorbacks are pretty pleased with how he is handling it. But there has been A LOT of movement and shuffling at the linebacker positions in practice. Different guys seem to be in different packages (and maybe some buttons are being pushed, too). So don’t be surprised at who starts at some of these spots on gameday. It could be a what package is Arkansas starting in deal.
• Oxner or Swanson? Grayson or Cook? The two offensive line positions that we told you earlier this week that are still unsettled are, in fact, still unsettled. All four players have gotten their chances to work with the first-team unit. I wouldn’t be shocked if they’re all given a chance to work with the first-team unit in the season opener, too. We’ll keep monitoring the situation up front throughout the week.
• We’ve seen Alfred Davis working with the first-team at nose guard all preseason. But that doesn’t mean he’s the starter, apparently, either. Arkansas has listed three — Davis, Byran Jones and Zach Stadther — on the depth chart with no clearcut starter. I wouldn’t be surprised if Davis starts the opener, but expect Arkansas to rotate defensive linemen pretty regularly on the field and everyone along the front should play.
• Speaking of Jones, he is one of eight true freshmen I see listed on the depth chart. He is joined by DE Chris Smith, WRs Javontee Herndon, Julian Horton and Maudrecus Humphrey, CB Eric Bennett and S Daunte Carr and Darrell Smith. It gives you a good idea of who the Razorbacks are expecting to play this season. But don’t be surprised if some of these freshmen (like maybe Carr and Smith) are held out if possible.
• It should be no surprise that Arkansas didn’t name a starter at running back. My guess is that you won’t see a starter named, either. All four will be on the field this season and the guy who steps out first will likely depend on what play is being called. It’s still a big week for the backs, though, because Arkansas is looking for a couple of them to emerge and claim a few more carries than their teammates.
• Two notable absences on the depth chart. I did not see FB Van Stumon and OT Anthony Oden. Is it a coincidence these two, who should at least factor into the depth chart, aren’t listed? They were, after all, players who were arrested in the offseason. TE Austin Tate is listed as the first-team fullback. Grant Freeman and Tyler Deacon – who have been working with the 2nd-team offense – are listed as the backups at tackle. Bobby Petrino is not available for comment today, but we’re working to see if Oden and Stumon are, in fact, suspended.
• Arkansas knows who its return men are. Dennis Johnson will return kicks. Joe Adams will return punts. But to no one’s surprise, the kicking positions haven’t been decided. Dylan Breeding and Zach Hocker are still in competition for the punting job, although Petrino has all but said that Breeding is the man for that spot for now. And it’s a three-man battle for kicking duties between Alex Tejada, Eddie Camara and Hocker. I’m thinking tonight’s mock game – which will have a bigger emphasis on the kicking game – will decide who the Hogs are going with.
