Blog: Stumon, Oden Suspended For Opener

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said on the Southeastern Conference teleconference this morning that fullback Van Stumon and offensive lineman Anthony Oden have both suspended for the season opener against Tennessee Tech.

Both players were arrested in the offseason for alcohol-related offenses and the suspension appears to be another part of their punishment, which included plenty of extra conditioning work during the early part of preseason practices.

Petrino said the suspensions are for just one game “as of today.”

The news doesn’t come as much surprise. Both players were left off the Arkansas depth chart for the Tennessee Tech game when it was released last Friday. Tight end Austin Tate was listed as Arkansas’ only fullback on the depth chart. The tackle two-deep at tackle included DeMarcus Love, Ray Dominguez, Grant Freeman and Tyler Deacon.

Petrino’s appearance on the SEC call was the first time he has been available since the depth chart was released.

Other newsworthy items from Petrino’s time on the conference call:

• Sophomore Dylan Breeding has won the punting job over freshman Zach Hocker. However, Hocker is still in the mix for place kicking duties along with senior Alex Tejada. Petrino made no mention of Eddie Camara, a sign the freshman may be redshirting.

• Petrino was asked about NG Zach Stadther, who was working with the scout-team defense Tuesday. He said Stadther, who started eight games last season and is Arkansas’ most experienced player at the position, has “had a good camp. He’s not quite where we want him yet.” Alfred Davis worked with the first-team defense Tuesday, while freshman Byran Jones was with the second-team group.
