Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said quarterback Ryan Mallett continues to improve after sustaining a concussion against Auburn last Saturday.
In fact, Petrino said it’s possible Mallett could be back on the practice field Tuesday when the Razorbacks begin preparation for Ole Miss.
“He’ll go through a series of tests today this afternoon,” Petrino said. “Best case scenario he comes out and practices tomorrow. I don’t know that, but he has no headaches and he has no symptoms from the concussion so that is very, very positive.”
Mallett was knocked out of the game after leading the Razorbacks to a touchdown in the second quarter. Arkansas hasn’t said when the concussion occurred, but Mallett did take a hard fall after being hit by Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley on the drive. Mallett went to the locker room shortly after the touchdown drive and did not return until late in the third quarter, when he walked out to the sideline wearing street clothes.
Petrino was asked Monday what grade concussion Mallett received and said he did not know.
However, it appears Mallett’s concussion wasn’t severe.
“They didn’t give me a grade on it, but he has had no symptoms since yesterday morning since he came in and reported,” Mallett said. “Through the night Saturday he was good and if that continues he might get to practice tomorrow. That’s what I am hoping anyway.”
Petrino also was asked if there was anything else wrong with Mallett.
In particular, he was asked about the quarterback’s left, non-throwing shoulder. Mallett underwent surgery to tighten up the shoulder at the end of the 2009 season and he has been wearing a protective brace on it throughout the first half of the season. Petrino said Monday there is no shoulder problem.
“No, not at all,” Petrino said. “Everything but his head. I think he’ll be OK.”
If Mallett can’t practice Tuesday, backup quarterback Tyler Wilson will handle first-team reps. The sophomore filled in well at Auburn, throwing for 332 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. It was the first significant game action of his career and Wilson said he grew from the experience.
“Probably one of the best things I took out of Saturday, when I stepped in I saw some belief in guy’s eyes and the confidence they had in me and it really made me feel part of it,” Wilson said. “I think I propelled from there.”
