FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas linebacker Ross Rasner has been suspended indefinitely by coach Bobby Petrino after being arrested by the University of Arkansas Police Department late Thursday night.
Rasner, 19, was charged with possession of marijuana and minor in possession of alcohol after police found him in a parked car on campus, according to a preliminary report. The report said the arresting officer approached the car, which was running and had its lights on, to make sure it wasn’t left unattended in the parking lot.
When the officer reached the car, Rasner rolled down the window. The officer then smelled the “odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” according to the report. A search of the vehicle produced some “marijuana wrapped in a paper towel” and a “purple Crown Royal bag with an opened bottle” approximately “3/4 full of whiskey.”
Rasner was placed under arrest on the two charges and booked into the Washington County Detention Center at 1:22 a.m. He was released at 3:55 a.m. after posting an $825 bond, according to the Washington County Detention Center’s website.
“Ross Rasner has been suspended indefinitely effective immediately and I am extremely disappointed in his actions,” Petrino said through a media relations department spokesperson.
Rasner, who did not participate in Friday’s practice, has a hearing set for May 6.
His arrest occurred just before Arkansas plays its spring-ending game in Razorback Stadium. Rasner was penciled in as a member of the Red team and had turned in a productive spring with the defense.
The Waco, Texas, native is the third Arkansas player arrested for possession of marijuana since last October. Police found defensive tackle D.D. Jones with marijuana following a traffic stop last October. Wide receiver Lance Ray was arrested after marijuana was found in his dorm room in January.
Jones served a one-game suspension. Ray has not practiced this spring.
