A chance glimpse of a tombstone seven years ago by Kathy Gastineau of Ward has grown into an effort to rescue a piece of Civil War-era history. The tombstone was in an old cemetery, thought to be abandoned, that is now being reclaimed by its owner, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Arkansas Region East District.
Spring Fling, sponsored by Austin Neighborhood Crime Watch, seems to have gone beyond expectations, with about 100 people coming to the picnic-style meeting. “This is a really great turnout,” Austin police Chief John Staley said of the crowd.
