Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said the Razorbacks have “an obligation to plan for the future.”
With that in mind, the program has unveiled a facilities master plan Tuesday.
Long described it as a “wish list” and a “long-term vision” for the program. Only one project – the football practice facility – has been approved at this point. Arkansas hasn’t announced a timeline for anything else.
But some of the “wish list” highlights include:
• Construction of a basketball practice facility Long said is important for numerous reasons (recruiting purposes being one of them). The facility would house two basketball courts, locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams, offices for coaches, training room areas and a basketball museum.
• Expansion of the football stadium in the north end zone. Long said the plan would include construction of club seats and an idea “borrowed” from Jerry Jones. Long said the vision is to have Arkansas players walk through those club-level seats on game day and onto the field where they would run through the ‘A.’
• Creation of an indoor baseball practice facility/track and field throwing facility. It would be built adjacent to Baum Stadium and would house the Razorbacks in foul weather. Arkansas’ indoor track facility does not currently include space for competitions like the discus, javelin and hammer throws.
• Construction of a 5,000-seat arena intended for volleyball and gymnastics. Both sports currently use Barnhill Arena. If a new facility is built, it increases the chances of Barnhill Arena being torn down.
Long was “conservative” when talking about the costs for projects on the master plan, saying it would be $300 million over the next 30 years. More details should be provided later today.
