Guard’s 39th no longer on deployment list

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas National Guard’s 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team is no longer scheduled for mobilization.

Maj. Gen. William Wofford, adjutant general of the Arkansas Guard, was informed in a letter and phone call Friday that the 39th, which received orders in December 2010 to prepare for possible deployment, has been taken off the list, said Sgt. First Class Chris Durney, spokesman for the Arkansas Guard.

The 39th has twice been deployed to Iraq in the past eight years, in 2003-2004, and again to 2007-2008.

During the first deployment, 22 members of the unit were killed in action. Two died of non-cambat injuries during the second deployment, Durney said.

About 3,000 soldiers are members of the 39th.
