BREAKING NEWS Tuesday, Mar 11, 2008 Richardson out of coaching mix at ASU Arkansas News Bureau FAYETTEVILLE - Former Arkansas basketball coach Nolan Richardson said Tuesday that he is no longer a candidate for the job at Arkansas State University. Richardson's name has been connected to the ASU job since shortly after Dickey Nutt resigned on Feb. 19. He has had various conversations with ASU officials and was in Jonesboro at least once last week. "I am no longer involved with the job," he said in a telephone interview. "It just didn't fit for me. We couldn't agree on several things, not just one." Richardson, 66, said he visited with ASU officials on Tuesday morning and informed them of his decision. He had high praise for ASU Chancellor Robert L. Potts and said he had enjoyed their conversations. He also said ASU is "moving in the right, positive direction." Richardson said he is still interested in returning to coaching. "It's clear now if the right situation comes about, that's what it's all about, trying to pick out the right situation," he said. He replaced Eddie Sutton at Arkansas prior to the 1985-86 season and was fired prior to the end of the 2001-02 season. He led the Razorbacks to three Final Four appearances and his 1993-94 team won the national championship, beating Duke 76-72 in the finals. |
