Taking inventory of the Democrats' presidential contenders
Wednesday, Apr 16, 2008

By David Sanders

The Democratic Primary is the gift that keeps giving. The elongated calendar has afforded Hillary and Barack, Barry, B. Hussein or Osama, as one editor of a major news organization called him, many opportunities to step all over themselves. Now is as good of time as any to check in with those who provide those of us in this business so much to write about.

Barack, Barry, B. Hussein or ... Osama: Who is this guy? I'm not referring to his names. Look, this smooth talking politician from Chicago's south side isn't who he pretends to be, and now it appears that Democrats - at least those in the Keystone State - are catching on.

While hanging out behind closed doors at a fund-raiser with the limp-wristed, weak-kneed, we-despise-you-if you-aren't-from-a-major-metropolitan-area crowd in San Francisco, Obama decided to unleash his true feelings about a group of Americans by whom all who were within earshot of his words were repulsed.

You've probably read his offensive comments, but they are too rich to paraphrase. Read them again because I sure wouldn't want to be accused of taking what he said out of context or misrepresenting his words, which, according to Obama, is what the rest of the country has done:

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and the jobs have been gone now for 25 years, and nothing's replaced them. It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said as he tried to explain why he wasn't catching on in Pennsylvania's more rural parts.

We've endured the whole Pastor Wright mess. How Obama can stand by that crazy man who preaches Black Liberation Theology, which is considered heretical by most orthodox types, and whose entire ministry is based on division, not just of the races, but classes as well, I'll never know. Now, Obama attacks those who, for whatever reason, do not swoon at the sound of his lofty speeches? Apparently he is more like his crazy former pastor than he'd been given credit.

Let me bring it back home. If Obama is the Democratic nominee, I can't wait to see our local Democrats ? Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, along with Reps. Marion Berry, Mike Ross and Vic Snyder - campaign with him at his side. They are loyal Democrats, right?

Even if Obama captures his party's nomination and doesn't win the presidential contest, there could be a backlash against Democrats in 2010 - even against those who are considered to represent some of safest Democratic areas of the country. If he wins the whole thing, it could be worse. At least some of the Democrats I know are aware this could happen. But, perhaps our local Democrats cling to their guns and religion too much.

Hillary Clinton: I was starting to feel sorry for her, with her husband doing all that race-baiting earlier this year and then her forgetting the fact that she didn't land in the Balkans under the threat of sniper-fire, but its Hillary. As I see it, she and Bill are getting back all that they dished out while they ran the country.

I couldn't help but laugh when she chided the Bush team for not having a policy for China, because not only is Bill taking money from a firm that is reportedly aiding the Chinese Communist government with its recent crackdown, but lest we forget the Clinton administration's China policy, which was to sell the Communists classified defense technology. Maybe that's what she meant.
