Free gas can exchanges offered in Pulaski, Crittenden counties Wednesday, Apr 30, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Residents of Pulaski and Crittenden counties are invited to take part in a free gas can exchange program aimed at improving air quality in those counties, the state Department of Environmental Quality said Tuesday. On certain dates from May through August, residents can exchange their gas cans for more environmentally friendly cans designed to reduce the release of ozone-causing pollutants into the air, ADEQ spokeswoman Kelly Robinson said. Ground-level ozone is the main ingredient in smog. The new cans, which meet standards set by the California Air Resources Board, have walls made of high density polyethylene to reduce permeation of vapors, Robinson said. The cans also have shut-off spouts to prevent spills. Crittenden County, located across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tenn., has been designated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as being out of compliance with the national ozone standard. Pulaski County may receive that designation in the next few years, Robinson said. If 6,000 cans are exchanged, Arkansas' annual emission of volatile organic compounds could be reduced by 17.38 tons, Robinson said. The EPA provided funding for the state to purchase the cans for $8.45 each, she said. Exchanges will be conducted at the following locations: -Little Rock, 10001 Kanis Road, 7 a.m.-noon on May 3. -West Memphis, Mid-South Community College parking lot, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 17. -Little Rock, 3403 W. 33rd St., 7 a.m.-noon on June 14. -Jacksonville, 1300 Marshall Drive, 7 a.m.-noon on June 28. -North Little Rock, 12th and Willow streets, 7 a.m.-noon on July 19. -Sherwood, 6500 North Hills Blvd., 7 a.m.-noon on Aug. 2. |
