New $7 million center gives Delta students access to four-year degrees
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2008

Arkansas News Bureau

WEST MEMPHIS - Officials on Tuesday dedicated a new $7 million center at Mid-South Community College that will extend access to four-year educational programs to rural residents of Arkansas' Mississippi River Delta.

Through the University Center's combination of live classroom teaching, compressed video, interactive Web programs and on-demand multimedia technology, students can earn baccalaureate degrees from a number of four-year institutions statewide.

Degree programs in the areas of information technology, renewable energy technology, transportation/logistics, entrepreneurship, addiction studies and education, among others, will be offered because of their potential to significantly affect the economic growth of the Delta, officials said.

The concept for the center was developed by the Arkansas Delta Training and Education Consortium, which includes MSCC, Arkansas Northeastern College, Arkansas State University-Newport, East Arkansas Community College and Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas.

Other institutions, including University of Arkansas campuses in Fayetteville and Fort Smith, are partnering with the center and more are expected to do so, officials said.

Mid-South Community College paid for most of the University Center's cost, with $2 million coming from state funds.
