Illegal immigration proposal resubmitted to AG day after second rejection Saturday, May 3, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - A day after its second rejection by Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, a proposed ballot initiative that would make it more difficult illegal immigrants to receive public benefits was resubmitted by Secure Arkansas. A chairwoman for the grassroots organization said she believes the latest revision addresses all of the points McDaniel raised in his most recent opinion. McDaniel rejected the proposal for the complexity and length of the ballot title, as well as various ambiguities in the text of the proposal. "I am confident the voters of Arkansas will have the opportunity to vote on this measure in November," said Jeannie Burlsworth, the organization's chairwoman. If McDaniel approves the measure's language, the organization will have until July 7 to collect the 61,974 signatures required to place the initiative on the ballot. |
