Beebe declares two counties disaster areas after weekend storms

LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Beebe declared Arkansas and Phillips Counties disaster areas Monday after weekend tornadoes and thunderstorms ravaged the areas.

Also Monday, Beebe toured Stuttgart, where 50 to 60 homes and 15 businesses were heavily damaged or destroyed. In the wake of the Saturday night storms, there have been nine confirmed injuries, with one requiring hospitalization, Beebe's office said.

The declarations are the latest in a long season of severe weather in Arkansas. Beebe declared 11 counties disaster areas after the May 2 tornadoes, 60 counties after the floods and tornadoes of March and April and 13 counties following a record-setting tornado outbreak of Feb. 5.
