Parole Board recommends clemency for sick murderer Tuesday, Sep 30, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The state Parole Board recommended clemency Monday for a convicted murderer who in recent years has had a kidney and part of his lung removed because of cancer. Earnest Dean Murphy, 58, has served 36 years in prison on a capital murder conviction from Pulaski County. The board voted 4-1 to recommend Murphy be made immediately eligible for parole, one of seven recommendations for grants of clemency made to Gov. Mike Beebe. In addition to kidney and lung surgery, Murphy also has had three layers of muscle tissue removed and doctors have suggested more surgery, the parole board noted in its paperwork. Pulaski County Prosecutor Larry Jegley and Sheriff Doc Holliday both have objected to the recommendation. Murphy was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the 1972 beating death of Dave Hardwick. "I know what I did was (a) very bad thing and I don't think anyone is sorryer (sic) than I am for what happen(ed) that night," Murphy wrote in his clemency application. Parole Board member John Belken voted not to recommendation clemency for Murphy. The board's recommendations will go the governor after a 30-day public notice period. |
