Beebe touts Ross in campaign ad

LITTLE ROCK — Mike Ross’ first television ad in his 2014 campaign for governor features the fellow Democrat who currently holds the office.

Gov. Mike Beebe hails the former state senator and 4th District congressman in the 30-second spot.

“We need a governor and proven leader middle-class families can count on — that’s Mike Ross,” Beebe declares in the commercial. “I’ve had the privilege of knowing Mike for 25 years, and I’ve watched him work. Mike Ross has the commonsense leadership style that will make our economy work for everyone. His commitment to our children and schools is unwavering. And no one is more independent than Mike.”

Since announcing his candidacy in April, Ross has pinned much of his run for governor on the popular two-term Democratic incumbent, saying he would continue Beebe’s policies.

The campaign commercial started a cable television run Saturday, aired during Sunday’s Bowl football game featuring Arkansas State University and is to air on broadcast stations for several weeks, sources told

The Republican Governors Association responded to the ad Monday by issuing a release stating that during his 12 years in Congress, Ross was the lead sponsor of only three bills that became law: One to rename a federal building in Pine Bluff, one to rename a lock and dam near Redfield and one to rename a post office in Parkdale.

“A ‘proven leader’ accomplishes more in 12 years as a congressman than (passing) three bills that just (rename) two buildings and a dam,” the association said in the release.

Ross is the only announced Democratic candidate for governor. Former Republican congressman Asa Hutchinson, state Rep. Debra Hobbs and businessman Curtis Coleman are seeking the GOP nomination.
