Powerball produced non-jackpot winners in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — While players in Arizona and Missouri split Powerball’s record-high jackpot of $587 million, two tickets bought in Arkansas fetched smaller prizes, state lottery officials said Thursday.

Officials also said excitement over the jackpot generated more than $10 million in Powerball sales in Arkansas leading up to Wednesday’s drawing.

The Nahlen family of Conway and Houston, Ark., claimed a $40,000 prize on Thursday, and a ticket worth $10,000 was sold in Arkansas to an as yet unidentified winner, said state lottery spokeswoman Julie Baldridge.

The run-up to Wednesday’s jackpot drawing started Oct. 4. During that time, $10.6 million Powerball tickets were sold in the state, $3.3 million worth of them on Wednesday, Baldridge said. By Thursday, the state lottery’s ticket sales for November were $1 million ahead of sales for all of November 2011, she said.

All proceeds from Arkansas lottery tickets, after prizes and expenses, go to fund college scholarships.
