UCA names new chief of staff

CONWAY — A University of Central Arkansas president on Wednesday named a replacement for the school’s former chief of staff, who faces felony charges.

UCA President Tom Courtway announced the appointment of Kelley Erstine, a Sheridan native, 1979 UCA graduate and former member of the university’s board of trustees.

Since July 2008, Erstine has served as chief executive officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, a state trade association representing approximately 1,000 independent insurance agencies.

In his new position at UCA, Erstine’s salary will be $170,000 a year.

He replaces Jack Gillean, who resigned abruptly in June 2012 for undisclosed reasons. He was subsequently charged with felony burglary and insurance fraud counts, as well as one misdemeanor count of issuing a false financial statement.

Among other things, authorities say Gillean’s master key was used in burglaries on the UCA campus.
