SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Arkansas baseball team (29-18) put a lid on its nonconference schedule Tuesday afternoon, scoring early runs to cruise to a 4-1 victory over Missouri State (19-21) at Hammons Field.
The Razorbacks broke out the bats in the second inning and batted around to score four runs on five hits. Jake Wise drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Michael Bernal followed with a two-run homer over the fence in left field for his second home run of the year to give Arkansas a 3-0 lead.
Andrew Benintendi capped off the big inning with an RBI single to right field to send Bobby Wernes to the plate and give the Razorbacks a 4-0 second-inning advantage.
Arkansas trotted six pitchers to the hill with Dominic Taccolini (2-0) getting the win in relief after tossing 2 hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Colin Poché and Jackson Lowery each worked 2.0 innings, while Jacob Stone, Zach Jackson and Michael Gunn worked an inning apiece to close the game. Gunn earned his seventh save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.
“I thought our pitching staff did a great job, basically we had it scripted out where everyone would go two innings and fortunately we got the lead the held them down,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “That was a good road win.”
The Razorbacks return to action this weekend, traveling to Oxford, Miss., to take on No. 10 Ole Miss at Swayze Field. First pitch Friday is slated 6:30 p.m., followed by 2:15 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
