Malzahn: Marshall, Mincy Won’t Start vs. Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE — Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall and cornerback Jonathan Mincy will not start the season opener against Arkansas on Aug. 30.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced the punishment for both players after the team’s first preseason practice Friday, according to AL.com. While the two will not start the opener, Malzahn said both will play against the Razorbacks.

Marshall’s punishment comes after he was cited for possession of marijuana following a traffic stop in Georgia last month. The preseason Heisman Trophy candidate is returning for his second season as a starter for the Tigers, but will be replaced by sophomore Jeremy Johnson for at least the first snap against Arkansas.

Mincy, who was arrested and charged with second-degree marijuana possession in late June, will spend an unspecified time on the sideline as well. The three-year starter had 56 tackles, one interception and broke up 14 passes last season.

Malzahn also confirmed Friday that left guard Alex Kozan will miss 2014 with a back injury, according to AL.com. Kozan earned All-SEC honors as a freshman last season.
