HUTCHINSON, Kan. – After thunderstorms prevented the Arkansas men’s golf team from taking the course for Friday’s first round, the Razorbacks nearly completed two rounds on Saturday at the NCAA Championships held at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Unfortunately, for Arkansas, it was never able to get into the groove that it found last weekend at the Columbia Regional where it fired a 54-hole score of 28-under par. Highlighted by senior Sebastian Cappelen’s two-under 68, the Razorbacks shot a 292 (+12) in their first round and are currently 19-over in 29th place with 2-4 holes left to play in the second round.
Play was stopped due to darkness at 8:31 p.m. and Arkansas will return to the course to finish its second round on Sunday at 7 a.m. With another wave of teams (15) still needing to play their second round, the Razorbacks will find out their third round tee time sometime early Sunday afternoon.
Cappelen, who has four holes to play in the second round, is currently Arkansas’ low-man at one-over through 32 holes. Playing in his third NCAA Championships, Cappelen shot a three-under 32 on the back in the first round en route to the 68 which was his 53rd career under-par round. From the end of the first round to the start of the second, Cappelen went 16 holes without a bogey.
No one was more disappointed to hear the horn go off due to darkness than redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford who had just made his fourth consecutive birdie on the par 5 7th hole. The string of four straight birdies moved Crawford to even-par in the second round and four-over for the tournament after a first round 74.
The sophomore tandem of Taylor Moore and Nicolas Echavarria both turned in 75s in the first round and will begin Sunday morning at two-over for the second round. Moore, who has made eight straight pars, will restart on the par 5 7th where all three Razorbacks that have passed through in the second round have birdied. Echavarria took advantage of the par 5 7th for the second time on the day and will start back up on the par 4 8th hole.
